The Evolving Role of the Modern Paralegal

Samantha Misch

The paralegal profession has evolved significantly over the past decade. Advances in technology, complex work assignments and changing workplaces are reshaping the paralegal role. What was once seen as a secretarial role is now developing into an essential member of the legal team. Today’s paralegals are researchers, problem solvers, IT experts, and strategic partners within legal departments.

Growth of technology platforms, AI and E-discovery have greatly expanded what paralegals can do to support attorneys. Growth of legal tech platforms can lead to quicker organization of documents and paralegals are often at the forefront of understanding how to use these platforms. AI is booming, as we all know, and yet again paralegals are at the front line to understand how to best utilize AI in the workplace. As technology evolves, the value of a skilled paralegal who can leverage these tools continues to grow.

While paralegals are still performing many administrative functions, we now are increasingly handling more complex tasks. Whether it be compliance tracking, contract management, or case/project management, paralegals serve a dynamic function and partner. As such, the profession requires adaptability and continuous learning to stay on top of more dynamic tasks.

Since the profession is evolving so much, continuing education is critical to being successful in this field. My advice is to stay informed on legal tech, ethical responsibilities and best practices as a paralegal. These are things that you won’t know when you need the knowledge until it’s right there in front of you! Professional organizations such as the Illinois Paralegal Association play an important role in helping paralegals stay current.

The IPA strives to provide quality CLE opportunities, networking events, leadership opportunities and educational events so that paralegals statewide can get involved with various projects and be successful in their careers.

The future of the paralegal profession is bright and will continue to be a critical role within the legal industry. The IPA will continue to support members as the profession evolves. Across law firms, corporations and government offices, paralegals are here to stay.

Sincerely,
